You probably know your fair share of specialists. You know — people who have fine-tuned a skill or knowledge about a market segment, who can walk you through all of the particulars of a particular platform or tool. "Specialist" is even part of many peoples' business titles.<br />
<br />
These people are valuable. Their grasp of the details and proficiency in execution is what busy executives often need.<br />
<br />
But don't confuse them with strategists.<br />
<br />
Strategists may have a more fundamental understanding of some of the details, but they perceive how pieces fit together from disparate functions and areas. The strategist can look above the clutter and make sense of an overall program, integrating the tactics that specialists execute.<br />
<br />
But there's a distinction.<br />
<br />
A specialist is an order-taker. A strategist is an adviser.<br />
<br />
A specialist can tell you about one thing. A strategist can find the intersection of many things.<br />
<br />
A specialist knows the next development in their area of expertise. A strategist spots trends based on pulling together disparate information that might be outside of a domain of expertise.<br />
<br />
Strategists have spent time in their careers as specialists. Specialists are usually less broadly experienced.<br />
<br />
<br />
In the end, we need both specialists and strategists. But we also need to know when it's appropriate to engage each one.<br />

<li>Facebook and Samsung now have some competition in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-announces-daydream-for-virtual-reality-2016-5" target="_blank">virtual reality space, with Google Daydream</a>, a mobile phone-compatible VR device that is slated to work with any kind of smartphone that runs with Android N operating system (not just a Samsung) — plus headset manufacturers may use Daydream to create their own compatible headsets. <i>Prediction: this is the technology that will open up VR to the masses</i>.</li>
<li>There's also <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/18/11672938/google-assistant-chatbot-virtual-assistant-io-2016" target="_blank">Google Assistant</a>, which we'll cover below in the Bot section of our newsletter.</li>
<li><a href="http://techcrunch.com/2016/05/18/duo-video-app-google/" target="_blank">Duo is an HD video calling app</a> that's an answer to Facetime and Skype.</li>
<li>And <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/18/11699122/google-allo-messaging-app-announced-io-2016" target="_blank">Allo is a messaging app</a>, with Google's search function built right in. The reason for video chat separate from messaging? To keep the apps lightweight and differentiate from the others. <i>Not sure that people will want additional apps; time will tell how functional Google makes them</i>.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/18/11688376/google-home-speaker-announced-virtual-assistant-io-2016" target="_blank">Google Home</a> is an always-listening small speaker that will compete with Amazon Echo coming out later this year. <i>No, it's not creepy that in addition to owning your browsing and searching habits, your email and your online storage, Google will now have access to everything you say in your home. Not creepy at all</i>.</li>
<li>But when you look at everything that Alphabet has done, it's a matter of <a href="https://stratechery.com/2016/googles-go-to-market-gap/" target="_blank">catching up and competing to be the best amid competitors</a> like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple.</li>

And <a href="https://www.facebook.com/kohls/videos/10154229351086248/" target="_blank">they got it on video</a>. <i>Great example of a brand not making it all about them, and celebrating a true fan</i>.</li>

It’s quite a thing when nearly 10% of Facebook’s population has seen <a href="https://www.facebook.com/candaceSpayne/videos/10209653193067040/" target="_blank">a single video</a>. This kind of shared experience is something that I truly believe can help bring us closer together. I’m of course referring to the charming and delightful video that <a href="https://www.facebook.com/candaceSpayne" target="_blank">Candace Payne</a> shared this week, which then became <b>the most viewed Facebook Live video ever</b>.</div>

Since that video made its way across many Facebook profiles and news outlets, it’s become a huge hit, with over 125 million views and counting (and only about 1,000 of those are from me and my family watching it repeatedly). <br />
<br />
But the thing is, I’ve seen the same video uploaded to Pages that don’t own it. They’ve scraped it from Candace’s profile and uploaded it to Facebook as their own, and they’re getting millions of views of content that is not their intellectual property. There are even <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MANDATORY/" target="_blank">entire pages dedicated to posting stolen videos</a>.<br />

<b>Make reporting frictionless</b></h3>
I’d love to be able to report these pages or even each individual video, but Facebook doesn’t make that possible if the content isn’t mine. I know Facebook has championed “frictionless sharing” as part of its user experience mantra. Well, if intellectual property is stolen and uploaded as part of that sharing process, shouldn’t “frictionless reporting” be present on the other end? Otherwise, you’ve turned on the spigot of intellectual property theft without the means of slowing it.<br />
<br />
While <a href="https://media.fb.com/2016/04/12/introducing-rights-manager/" target="_blank">Rights Manager</a> is a great set of tools for the video content owner, there’s still nothing to assist those with watchful eyes who want to help. To ask an individual to submit a report on every instance of their video being stolen is a solution that simply doesn't scale  — nor is it feasible if they can’t see a particular Page or Profile. But if other community-minded people see an infraction across a multitude of Facebook Pages and Profiles, they should have the power to report it.<br />

<b><br /></b><b>Next steps: my hope</b></h3>
I hope that the Facebook team (a) looks at the infractions against Candace, Kohl’s and any other thousands of individuals and brands that are being affected by this practice; (b) takes action against those who are violating Facebook’s policies and the intellectual property rights of the same; and (c) improves the reporting process for third parties who can help by reporting the infractions.<br />

<li>As you undoubtedly heard, some former contract workers claimed that <a href="http://gizmodo.com/former-facebook-workers-we-routinely-suppressed-conser-1775461006">Facebook suppresses conservative news in its Trending module</a>.</li>
<li>Of course, <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/05/09/facebook-accused-of-censoring-conservative-news-articles/84151894/">Facebook denied anything of the sort</a> (or at least said there was no evidence to support that claim).</li>
<li>But an exclusive report from the Guardian referenced <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/may/12/facebook-trending-news-leaked-documents-editor-guidelines">leaked internal guidelines that show human intervention at almost every stage of its news operation</a>, akin to a traditional media organization.</li>
<li>And in the ultimate of ironies, the story about Facebook suppressing news on the Trending section then <a href="http://qz.com/679714/facebooks-trending-news-section-is-featuring-an-article-about-how-biased-it-is/">began to trend</a>.</li>
<li>While it wouldn't be news that the <i>New York Times</i> or the <i>Wall Street Journal</i> cherry-picked news items, <a href="http://nymag.com/selectall/2016/05/what-it-really-means-that-facebook-suppressed-conservative-news.html">this is an issue for Facebook</a>, where more people get news than any other single source— and where people have been led to believe that it's the algorithm that surfaces these stories, as Facebook claims that the section is made of “topics that have recently become popular on Facebook.” <i>While Facebook hasn't prevented (and won't prevent) anyone from sharing anything, the issue is that <b>Trending topics inform what people share; so a news item that isn't Trending simply won't get the benefit of more people seeing it and sharing it</b></i>.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.recode.net/2016/5/10/11651268/senate-commerce-committee-facebook-zuckerberg-news-manipulation-bias">The U.S. Senate's Commerce Committee is now interested</a> and has asked Facebook to comply with an inquiry.</li>
<li>Mark Zuckerberg put out a pretty balanced statement, committed to continued openness and sharing for all, and even indicated that <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10102830259184701?pnref=story">he'll be inviting conservative leaders to Facebook to discuss the topic</a>.</li>
